Tweetup at the EXPO

Another NEW event at this year's EXPO!

Did you know? Frederick is well-represented on Twitter, with hundreds of local users that include many Chamber member business owners and professionals. Conversations on Twitter often lead to offline meetings and productive partnerships. Tweetups are events that are organized online, but offer an opportunity for local Twitter users to meet each other and build relationships “in real life.”

This year’s EXPO features a very special Frederick Tweetup, sponsored by Beth Schillaci at VillageWorks Communications. Join us in the Courtyard for networking ... Even if you don't already use Twitter! We'll also enjoy easy access to tasty treats by Cakes for Cause.

Register to attend the Tweetup, and see a list of other local Twitter users who plan to attend: http://twtvite.com/e7i260

Looking for conversations about this and other local tweetups? Search for #fredtweetup on Twitter. You can also tweet about the EXPO! We have our own hashtag: #expo2009.

Urbandictionary.com defines a Tweetup as an organized or impromptu gathering of people who use Twitter. (A meet up of people that 'tweet' using Twitter.) For example: Are you going to the tweetup?

Seminars

NEW this year, the EXPO features informative seminars throughout the day! There are plenty of seats available for each FREE seminar, and registration is not required.

Conference Room A

A special series, sponsored by Sandy Spring Bank – These seminars will help your business find success, regardless of the state of the economy.

9:30 a.m.
Cindy Palmer, VP Commercial Relationship Manager, Sandy Spring Bank
"Establishing a relationship with your Commercial Lender"

Worried about satisfying your debts in the future? Or maybe you have fallen behind? Regardless of whether or not you are experiencing financial difficulties, it’s a good time to establish or reestablish your banking relationship. Don’t avoid your bank; chances are they are willing to work with you if you have a plan in place and projections for the future. Conversely, it is not necessarily cause for alarm if your banker reaches out to you or requests financial information. They are trying to do the same thing-be proactive and engaged in your business. This seminar will help you in what you need to establish good communication with your bank.

10:30 a.m.
Justin Schor, Frederick County TransIT & UrbanTrans
"Commuting Solutions that save money, time, and the environment"

Let TransIT show you how your business can save on taxes: Federal Tax Law allows employers and their employees who bicycle, vanpool or take transit to work to save money on taxes. Creative commuting solutions can also improve employee retention, save on gas, preserve natural resources, and reduce traffic congestion. Learn more about free assistance to help employers set up commute benefit programs for their employees.

11:30 a.m.
Philip Fish & Vicky Gillespie, Sandy Spring Bank
"Are you ready for the future?"

Are you and your family ready for retirement, a sudden illness or the death of a loved one? As members of Sandy Spring Bank's Private Financial Services group, Philip W. S. Fish and Vicky Gillespie will use their 30+ combined years in the financial, banking and trust services industry tp help you answer these and other critical questions: Will you have sufficient income for your retirement needs? Will you disinherit the IRS and the State? Will your business be managed and transferred per your wishes? Do you have the necessary legal documents in place? Have you named the appropriate decision makers?

12:30 p.m.
Steve Fennington & Hugh Gordon, Sandy Spring Bank
"Mortgages"

Learn more about the current residential mortgage and real estate environment, including availability of funds; values & sale prices; types of products utilized, deposit & income requirements; benefits of ownership in a primary residence, second home, and investment property; purchasing a PUD or custom built home; refinancing; renovations/additions; and how to make a successful application for a financing.

You’ll also have an opportunity to discover how to save more by investing in energy efficiency construction improvements. Energy Efficient Mortgages (EEM’s) and energy saving home improvements can more than pay for themselves without having to draw on savings. Learn more about the energy audit process for identifying and prioritizing energy saving construction improvements for your home that pay for themselves.

1:30 p.m.
Chesapeake Financial Group
"Investment strategies in a recession"

The first reaction for any company or individual in this downturn is to reduce or cut insurance coverages. But that might be the wrong thing to do. Due to lower sales & incomes, this might be the time you need insurance protection the most. You can’t afford to fund a large loss yourself today. Learn more about managing risk and reducing insurance costs in a downturn. Individuals and businesses will explore ideas for protecting assets and earning potential.

Conference Room B

Learn the basics of why and how to plan a meeting or event that is within your budget. Extensive handouts in a bound book will be available to attendees of the seminar.

1:30 p.m.
Kate Rader, Smart Company Magazine
“Impress the Press”

This entertaining seminar will reveal secrets to getting the attention of magazine publishers — both local and national. Kate Rader, the publisher of seven local publications, including Smart Company Magazine, will provide you with tips on utilizing available tools and techniques to get “free” press, and how to present your information so it gets a magazine editor’s attention.
